There were smiles, hugs and a few tears as 14 Hennepin County families forged permanent bonds in honor of National Adoption Day on Saturday. The day is a national effort to raise awareness for the more then 100,000 children in foster care across the nation who are waiting to find permanent homes.

KSTP reported that the Hennepin County adoptions, finalized just in time for the holiday season, will give 20 children new families.

In connection with the events of the day, WCCO reported that recording artist James Grear conducted a parenting seminar Saturday morning at the Hennepin County Health Services Building in downtown Minneapolis. Grear has adopted 11 children himself. This free event gave foster parents information about the adoption process.

Ramsey County also noted National Adoption Day with adoption finalization hearings for 17 children at the Ramsey County Juvenile and Family Justice Center in downtown St. Paul.
