It's hard to shop without guilt these days.
If whatever you're buying didn't come from a third-world factory, then it probably has a carbon footprint the size of Bigfoot, and vice versa. Yep, being an American consumer has gotten pretty darn complicated.
Never heard of it? That's okay, because the MOA store will be the very first in Minnesota. But to get you up to speed, it's a national chain of boutiques that focuses on "eco-conscious jewelry and accessories" – which are all made in America.
It was founded in 2004 in Rhode Island and has built up its brand through department-store sales, "store-within-a-store" concepts, and increasingly, standalone locations.
“ALEX AND ANI has grown into one of the most sought after jewelry brands of our time,” a Mall of America official said in a Thursday news release, adding that the new store will give the company exposure to some 40 million annual visitors.
Eco-friendly AND made in America?
The chain, which describes itself as a "humanitarian" company, uses "recycled materials with eco-conscious processes" in its designs, according to the MOA release.
Alex and Ani also says its philanthropic efforts – which include their "Charity by Design" products – have raised more than $45 million for non-profit organizations
Founder and CEO Carolyn Rafaelian designs each piece, according to the release, focusing on "powerful symbolism and personal meaning" for each item.
And, again, it's all made in the good old U.S. of A.
The ALEX AND ANI boutique is set to open "later this year" on the south end of Mall of America's first level.
