New babies for the new year include a preemie

It's a tradition, meeting the first new babies to be born in the new year.

WCCO reported that the first baby to be born in the Twin Cities after the stroke of midnight arried at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids. Lissa Claire and Shawn Leebens welcomed their still-unnamed 7-pound, 13-ounce daughter at 12:19 a.m. Wednesday.

Meanwhile, in Duluth the first baby of the year arrived ahead of schedule. The Northland's News Center reports that the little girl, who weighed just 1 pound, 14.7 ounces, arrived at 2:26 a.m. at Essentia Health St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth. The baby arrived after 28.8 weeks of pregnancy. Her parents, Blythe and Steve Thomas of Cloquet, have not yet named her. She's at St. Mary’s Medical Center’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

In Fargo-Moorhead, the Fargo Forum reports Adrian Blake Swanson arrived a couple of days past his due date, but in time to clock in as the area's first baby. He was born at 2:40 a.m. at Sanford Hospital.

The newspaper reported that three TV cameramen, three reporters, a photographer and a set of grandparents and great-grandparents crowded into mother Paige Swanson’s hospital room to meet him, with the hot camera lights causing the new mom to perspire.

“I didn’t sweat this much in labor,” Swanson joked.
