Minneapolis business leaders unveil big new vision for downtown

The Star Tribune takes an early look at what the city calls Downtown 2025. The plan calls for doubling the number of residents (by leveling the Metrodome and converting the site into a neighborhood, a plan that conflicts with the mayor's vision). The proposal also aims to create a "stadium district," revitalize Nicollet Mall and end homelessness, among other goals. But a big vision comes with a hefty price tag, of course: $2 billion.

Minneapolis skyways -- burden or blessing?

Prominent downtown business leaders say the eight miles of elevated walkways in the downtown area are "leaving sidewalks barren and storefronts empty." Mayor R.T. Rybak told the Star Tribune that he "would not support the development of any new skyways in the city." Many acknowledge the maze of walkways helped save Minneapolis once threatened by suburban offices and malls. But improving the skyways for the downtown's future is proving to be a complicated task.

Minneapolis Police Chief calling it quits

Minneapolis awaits plan for fire department in Rybak's new budget

When Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak delivers his budget address Wednesday many will be focused on what he has to say about the fire department. The fire chief and union leader have called for hiring additional firefighters to improve safety and response times. But at least one city council member says the department is doing fine as is and rhetoric to the contrary is only frightening residents.

Minneapolis council not keen on Rybak's stadium plan

Never mind the Legislature, Mayor R.T. Rybak may not be able to get his stadium proposal past Minneapolis' city council. Council members were underwhelmed by the mayor's presentation of a plan that would apply city sales tax money to a Vikings stadium once Minneapolis' convention center is paid off. A head count by the Downtown Journal finds Rybak lacks the votes to pass it right now.

Union leaders joined Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak to promote a stadium project they say would create 7,500 construction jobs in the city. Rybak is still working to convince city council members to back his plan to build a new home for the Vikings.
