New kiosks will help you get through airport security faster – for a price

Instead of waiting in line to get your ID checked, it scans your fingerprint and iris.

A faster way to get through airport security may be coming to the Twin Cities in the next few months – but it'll cost you.

Instead of waiting in line for a TSA agent to check your ID, you'll be able to verify your identity through your fingerprint and iris recognition at the kiosks in the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

Clear – the private security company that's behind the kiosks – says you'll get through the ID line in a matter of minutes, before joining other travelers for the screening process.

The video below shows how it'll work.

Airport officials are in the process of finalizing an agreement with the company to bring the service to MSP in the first quarter of 2017, airport spokesperson Patrick Hogan told GoMN.

The convenience comes with a price, though. An annual standard membership is $179, but if you're a Delta SkyMiles member it's cheaper or free, depending on your membership level.

That's more expensive than TSA Pre-check, which is $85 for a five-year membership and vows to get you through the security checkpoint (the ID check and physical screening) in an average of five minutes.

Clear is available at 15 airports, with plans to add the service to a few more "soon."

More automated systems coming

This isn't the only thing that'll speed up security at MSP.

The Metropolitan Airport Commission has earmarked $6 million to install automated security lanes at both security checkpoints in Terminal 1, Hogan told GoMN. The plan is to install the one at the south checkpoint this year and another at the north checkpoint next year.

These automated lanes were modeled after the lanes Delta tested at its hub in Atlanta, Hogan said. Essentially, they'll allow people to move through the line at their own pace – not based on how quickly the person in front of you is going.

You can read more about how the lanes work in this NPR News story, which says they're 30 percent more efficient.

MSP could get busier

These new ways to speed up the lines at MSP is good news for travelers who saw crazy long wait times at security checkpoints last year.

Especially because 2017 could be another busy year at the airport.

Last year 37.5 million people flew in and out of the airport (the second highest in airport history thanks to the addition of 20 new routes), a news release says. And airport officials say a few new routes for this year have already been announced, which could help boost passenger numbers.
