New proposed Stadium Village apartment could threaten several restaurants

A new proposed apartment building in Stadium Village near the University of Minnesota could threaten several favorite restaurants.

The 27-story apartment complex was proposed to the City of Minneapolis by Harbor Bay Development to be on the corner of Harvard Street SE and Washington Avenue SE, where the Bun Mi Sandwiches, The Big 10 Restaurant and Bar, Village Wok and Espresso Expose currently reside.

This is the same development group behind the luxury Latitude 45 Apartments in Downtown East.

The Minnesota Daily reported that the Big 10 Restaurant has a lease deal through 2019 and has heard nothing about a potential move out.

Development along the Green Line isn't a new trend. Metro Transit said in 2015 that there had already been $3 billion in new development along the Green Line corridor, including housing, businesses and restaurants, but at a cost to the establishments they replace.

Harbor Bay Development's proposed 430 units exceeds the 375-unit threshold limit, Council Member Cam Gordon explained in an newsletter, and has many more steps to go through before final consideration.

Harbor Bay Development is hoping to go the next step and make a presentation on March 31 to the Planning Commission.
