New pup for dog owner whose beloved best friend was immortalized in photo

John Unger once again hears the pitter-patter of little paws around his Bayfield, Wisconsin home.

Unger is a deeply devoted dog owner who comforted his pet Schoep in the waters of Lake Superior to make the 20-year-old dog comfortable as he neared the end of his life.

The picture of Unger's tending of Schoep went viral. The moment, captured by pet photographer Hannah Stonehouse Hudson, has been seen by millions.

Schoep, a rescue dog, died a year and a half ago. The story of Schoep's death was one of the most-read posts on BringMeTheNews in 2013.

Earlier this week, Unger visited the Northwoods Humane Society in Hayward, Wisconsin, where he saw Bear (seen at left). Unger told KARE 11 he immediately felt affection for the one-year-old pooch.

On his Facebook page, Unger posted the details of his adoption and a picture of Bear, with the comment "I am whole again."

More than 73,000 visitors have checked out his post.

As taken as Unger is with his new pet, he continues to mourn for Schoep, who he adopted while he was struggling with depression.

"He saved me that night and I could only do my very best for him after that," he said. "I talk to him still. Thank him for everything."
