The suds-guzzling students at the University of Wisconsin are the second-best partiers in the nation, according to a new ranking by Playboy magazine. The Madison school was No. 5 last year.

No Minnesota schools landed in the magazine's top 10 list, although 4,000 Minnesota students were enrolled at UW in Madison as of last fall, the Star Tribune notes. West Virginia topped the Playboy party-school list. The rest, in order: Colorado, Southern Cal, Florida State, Texas, LSU, Georgia, Arizona State and Maryland.

Notably absent was the University of Iowa, which was the No. 1 party school, according to students surveyed for an annual Princeton Review ranking. Wisconsin was No. 8 on that list this year.

Madison city officials and university officials have taken a number of steps in recent years to reduce student drinking. The city approved an ordinance in 2012 aimed at cracking down on large house parties. The city and university have tried to provide more entertainment options for students who aren't of legal drinking age, the AP notes.

But university officials face an uphill battle in the effort to curb student binge drinking, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported earlier this year.

Ten Wisconsin-Madison students were taken to a detox facility for excessive alcohol consumption in the week leading up to classes this year, including one with a life-threatening blood alcohol concentration of .37, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported. Last weekend, 39 students were ejected from the Wisconsin-Purdue football game in Madison, and 18 were arrested.

The Journal-Sentinel in 2008 published a five-part series called "Wasted in Wisconsin" that examined how drinking is a part of Wisconsin culture.
