The snow and subsequent freeze seen across Minnesota this week may have been a factor in a fatal crash in southeast Minnesota.

The Minnesota State Patrol says the crash happened on an "ice covered" Highway 14 near Courtland Township, between New Ulm and Nicollet, on Wednesday morning.

Killed in the crash was 41-year-old Michael John Reinarts, of New Ulm, who was driving a Chevrolet Express Van heading east.

It was hit by a Ford pickup traveling west, with police investigating the cause of the crash.

The driver of the pickup, a 68-year-old man from Mankato, and the 31-year-old male passenger in the Chevrolet suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The snow earlier this week caused havoc on state roads, with the State Patrol reporting more than 800 crashes and spinouts across Minnesota between Monday and Tuesday.
