New Viking Latavius Murray has surgery on his ankle

Well, this isn't the start the Vikings were hoping for.

New Minnesota Vikings running back Latavius Murray underwent ankle surgery Wednesday.

According to the Vikings, they were aware of the surgery before the signed Murray earlier this month and he is expected to fully recover and be available for training camp.

The team says the surgery was performed by Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The Vikings signed Murray to be the primary replacement for Adrian Peterson, whom the team has decided not to bring back after he missed 13 games last season due to a torn meniscus in his knee.

Murray ran for 2,268 yards in three seasons with Oakland – including 788 yards last season to go with 12 touchdowns. He also caught 33 passes for 264 yards last year.

His best year was in 2015 when he topped 1,000 yards rushing for the Raiders and scored six touchdowns.

While Murray, isn't a sure-fire future Hall-of-Famer like Peterson, the Star Tribune's Michael Rand highlights a few ways that he might actually be a better fit for the Vikings offense – especially that he's better in pass protection and better at running out of the shotgun than Peterson.
