Many northern Minnesota lakes that are usually clogged with ice until May started April ice-free in this crazy weather year. Gunflint Lake broke its record for earliest ice-out by a whopping 17 days. Crane, Winnibigoshish, and Upper Red Lake are among the others that broke records.

Warm weather and strong gusts of wind are opening up lakes far earlier than usual, and anglers and resort owners are eager to get a jump on the season.

March heat wave continues to shatter records

It's crazy. But it keeps happening. Insanely warm March weather broke records again this weekend. The Twin Cities had the earliest-ever 80-degree reading. Even the nation's icebox - International Falls - turned in a steamy 77 degrees, breaking the previous record for the date by 22 degrees. Duluth, Fargo, Rochester, St. Cloud, and Winona all set records, as well. Some much needed rain is expected late Sunday through Wednesday, with temperatures cooling down in the 60s for most of the work week.

Hennepin County is closing all access points to lakes

Fox 9 reports the sheriff's office made the decision after at least eight vehicles broke through thin ice on lakes in the Twin Cities. The unseasonably warm weather has made ice conditions extremely unpredictable. Access points will remain closed until further notice.
