Northern MN city named one of the world's best for outdoor thrills

Author:

If you're looking for adventure, make a trip to Ely.

National Geographic named it one of the best towns in the world for outdoor thrills – right up there with Niseko, Japan; Cairns, Australia; and Huaraz, Peru.

Why Ely?

Well it mostly has to do with the fact that the "quaint outdoor town" is right by the Boundary Waters. So you can easily grab a canoe and tent, and set out into a million acres of wilderness.

Perhaps the best way to explore it is via water – after all, there are 1200 miles of canoe routes. Many can only be reached by paddling and portaging.

Since you can't drive to all the lakes, you can get your thrills by being completely isolated.

And if you feel like it, you can live off the land.

With a permit, you can go fishing on the string of waters. Otherwise, National Geographic says you can snack on wild berries. Just be sure to share with the black bears that live in the area.

Other towns on the list

The only other U.S. town that made the list is Moab, Utah.

It's near the red rocks of Arches National Park, the colorful canyons of Canyonlands National Park, and the La Sal Mountains.

For a winter ski adventure, National Geographic recommends Niseko, Japan.

If you're looking to hike and climb:El Chaltén, Argentina.

To dive and mountain bike, try Cairns, Austrailia.

For some mountainous adventures: Manali, India; Huaraz, Peru; Hogsback, South Africa; Valbona, Albania.
