The St. Croix River apparently won't run wild this year -- at least not yet. The National Weather Service's Advanced Hydrological Prediction Service said the river topped out at 85.89 feet Saturday afternoon, about a foot below flood stage.

This year's brown Christmas may have a silver lining for some living along the Minnesota and North Dakota border. The National Weather Service's (NWS) first flood forecast says there's only a small chance of "major" flooding along the Red River next spring. But city officials on both sides of the river say it’s still too early to tell for sure. The NWS will release its next flood forecast at the end of January.

The Weather Service reports the Red River of the North is falling in Grand Forks after Monday's crest just over 17 feet. That's below flood stage and a far cry from the 40 or so feet it reached in each of the last three years.

Red River Valley flood threat up after February storms

The National Weather Service says there's a 50 percent chance of moderate flooding this spring. Two weeks ago, moderate flooding was listed at about 15 percent. The Star Tribune reports no public or private structures would be threatened.
