Officer seen hitting teenager on video put on leave pending investigation

Author:

The police officer captured on a video which appears to show him hitting a teenager has been placed on leave.

Richfield Police Department said in a news release Tuesday the officer, who has not been named, will go on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.

It follows the release of a video on Twitter that appears to show him striking a Somali teenager in the head.

Richfield PD says it was made aware of the video on Monday morning and has since taken action. Police Chief Jay Henthorne also met with Omar Jamal, Chief Executive of the Somali Human Rights Commission on Tuesday.

"The Richfield Police Department takes these complaints very seriously and will continue to conduct a thorough investigation," the news release says.

"The Richfield PD is dedicated to fairness, transparency and maintaining good community relations," the release adds. "The department appreciates Omar Jamal’s willingness to meet."

The incident occurred about 6:30 p.m. Saturday near 7200 Washburn Ave. S., which is close to Adams Hill Park. The police department said officers were responding to a “suspicious person” call and pulled over a vehicle in connection with the call.

The young man shown in the video, 19-year-old Kamal Gelle, said he was pulled over and given a citation for careless driving, according to The Associated Press.
