A 17-year-old boy died Friday evening after being hit by a driver who fled the scene.

According to the Anoka County Sheriff's Office, the 17-year-old from Nowthen, Minnesota, had been at a friend's place in Andover and "stepped out" around 6:20 p.m.

The boy's friends told officials they heard a dull collision sound followed by screeching tires. When they went outside to investigate, they found their friend in the street with multiple injuries, according to the sheriff's office. No vehicle was in sight, though.

The sheriff's office responded to the call, but the 17-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials say a preliminary investigation shows injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle.
