Police shoot knife-wielding intruder inside Blaine home

Officers responding to a report of a home break-in in Blaine ended up shooting the suspect after he lunged at them with a knife, officials said at a news conference.

Coon Rapids police received a call at 3:45 a.m. Thursday from a woman living on 92nd Avenue Northeast, who said she had locked herself in a bedroom and that her boyfriend was in the kitchen fighting with a person who had broken into her home, KSTP reports.

When the two officers arrived, the knife-wielding suspect lunged at them and the woman's boyfriend. That's when they fired, hitting the suspect, police said. The suspect was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive, WCCO notes.

The boyfriend, who didn't want to be identified, described the alarming altercation to the Star Tribune, saying "I was doing anything I could to keep his mind off stabbing me."

No other injuries were reported in the incident.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the officer-involved shooting, while the Blaine Police Department and the Anoka County Sheriff's Office will look into the alleged break-in.

Neighbors told KARE 11 and FOX 9 that there has been an uptick in crime on the street lately, saying the home where the incident happened is a "problem house on a problem street."

This was the third officer-involved shooting in the Twin Cities as of late. Last week, police in St. Paul and Bloomington were involved in fatal incidents.
