Police were called to Acker Street around 3:30 a.m. Monday after a man was seen with a gun.

Officials eventually located the man, who was walking with a woman, near the corner of Buffalo and Acker streets.

"After making contact with the parties, shots were fired by St. Paul officers," the statement from police says.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the woman was injured and transported to Regions Hospital. Her condition hasn't been released.

Police haven't said what exactly led to the shooting, but say there is no threat to the public.

Neighbors hear multiple of gunshots

Neighbors spoke with media outlets, saying they heard more than a dozen gunshots early Monday, according to reports.

Kenyari Jones, who lives nearby, told the Pioneer Press she heard five to six gunshots, followed by someone yelling "Put the gun down," before hearing more shots.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is on the scene of the shooting, according to tweets.

The St. Paul Police Department said earlier this year it would call in the BCA to investigate some officer-involved incidents that resulted in "death or serious injury of any person." Previously, the police department's homicide unit led those investigations.

Monday morning's shooting comes less than a day after more than 100 people marched through the Dayton's Bluff neighborhood of St. Paul, demanding peace and an end to gun violence following a recent spate of shootings in the area, MPR News reports.
