Officials making progress on wildfire near Hoyt Lakes

Author:

The wildfire that began Friday afternoon continued to burn in northeastern Minnesota Sunday.

In its 8 a.m. update Sunday, the U.S. Forest Service said the fire is approximately 1,000 acres, strung out several miles from east of Hoyt Lakes to west of Skibo Road.

Officials called Saturday's firefighting efforts "successful," noting there was minimal fire growth. The fire is 12 percent contained, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

On Sunday, firefighting teams will focus on the southeast areas of the fire, located near the town of Skibo. They'll use air and ground resources to strengthen fire lines, check for hot spots and provide protection to structures.

That area was evacuated out of precaution for residents, the Minnesota Incident Command System reports.

The forest service says over 300 people from 12 states are working to fight the fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Skibo fire was one of handful of wildfires crews were fighting Saturday. New fires flared up in the Embarass and Finland areas.

Sunday's forecast – temperatures in the 60s and lighter winds – should help with efforts to fight the wildfires, but the Duluth News Tribune says there won't be relief from the dry conditions. On Sunday, the National Weather Service listed northeastern Minnesota in critical fire weather.

After Sunday, the forecast shows there's a chance of showers for much of the work week.
