Update: Officials find boater who went missing on Lake Vermilion

He was found on an island.

The boater who went missing on Lake Vermilion has been found safe.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office says Frank Achter was found "safe and in good health" on Hoyt Island on Lake Vermilion around 7:15 a.m. Monday.

He had rented a boat from the Vermilion Dam Lodge around 8:30 a.m. Sunday, but never returned. Apparently he experienced boat trouble on Sunday, and made it to the island where he sought shelter in a cabin until the St. Louis County Rescue Squad found his boat.

Achter was taken to a local hospital to be checked out as a precaution.

Crews are searching for a missing boater on Lake Vermilion.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office says the man, who hasn't been identified, left the Vermilion Dam Lodge in a resort-owned rental boat around 8:30 a.m. Sunday, but never returned.

Staff at the lodge looked for the man, but didn't find him. The sheriff's office and the St. Louis County Rescue Squad began their search Sunday night, and continued to search for the boater Monday morning.

The 17-foot boat is gray and says Vermilion Dam Lodge on it, with officials noting the boat has a 50 horsepower tiller motor.

If anyone has any information about the missing man or the boat, they're asked to call 911.

Lake Vermilion is one of the largest lakes in Minnesota, totaling 39,271 acres, according to the Minnesota DNR. There are 341 miles of shoreline and 365 islands on the lake.
