On a really cold night, how low will it go?

The overnight low temperatures in Minnesota's forecast all start with a minus sign

Have you heard about our cold snap?

Wait, let's rephrase that ... have you been outside lately?

This is weather you have to take seriously or it could bite you in a frosty way. The National Weather Service has most of Minnesota under a windchill advisory from midnight through noon on Wednesday.

How cold is it getting overnight? Well, we notice on this map of the forecast low temperatures for Tuesday night/Wednesday morning that every single one of the Minnesota temps has a minus sign in front of it, led by the -18 in the northwest corner.

Temperatures won't tell the whole story, though.

The Weather Service says winds will be blowing 20 to 30 miles an hour with an occasional gust around 40 mph.

So wind chill readings will be steadily in the 25 to 30 below range. And not just tonight. We should try to get used to this, because the forecast shows pretty much the same thing every night through Saturday morning.

The Weather Service office in Grand Forks has a map of the wind chill forecasts across North Dakota – all of which are at least 30 below zero.

So, given what folks to the north and west are getting, maybe the Twin Cities should feel appreciate their comparatively balmy morning temperature of minus 2! (That attempt at positive thinking isn't going to cut it, is it?)

The forecasts for the areas around Duluth, La Crosse, and Sioux Falls are all bitterly cold. And, as we mentioned they'll stay that way most of the week. Highs on Friday should be a little above zero, though, and forecasters expect the cold spell to break this weekend, when we'll feel the heat of double digits again.
