The Louisiana Territory changes hands, going from Spain to the French. Part of this territory included what would later be a large portion of south and west Minnesota.
Just three years later, the US would buy the territory from France in the Louisiana Purchase.
The purchase would then lead to the land that would eventually become Minnesota to be part of multiple midwest territories until 1849, when the Minnesota Territory was formed engulfing parts of what would later be North and South Dakota.
In 1858, Minnesota would gain statehood, becoming the 32nd state in the union.
