Jacob H. Stewart is born in Clarmont, New York.

Upon moving to Minnesota in 1855, Stewart would serve as a medical officer in Ramsey County until 1857, when he would be appointed Surgeon General of the state.

In 1864, Stewart would become the first Republican mayor of St. Paul, and later be elected to the 45th Congress as a representative in 1876.

Stewart returned to St. Paul after serving in Congress, and died August 25, 1884, upon which he would be buried in the state capitol's Oakland Cemetary.

Stewart Avenue is named for him.
