On this day in 1905...

Horace Austin, the sixth Governor of Minnesota, dies in Minneapolis.

Austin led the effort in establishing a state board of health, dividing the state into three congressional districts, as well as regulating freight and railroad rates.

Austin would also serve as the third auditor of the U.S. treasury and as a railroad commissioner before he retired to spend the last 16 years of his life at his Lake Minnetonka home.

He was succeeded as governor by Cushman Davis.
