Minneapolis' first public Christmas is lit in Gateway Park.

The park, located in downtown on Hennepin and Second Street, was being planned by outgoing Mayor R.T. Rybak as a place to construct the first real downtown park for the city in ages, though that project never came about.

Minnesota will be supplying the Christmas tree to the U.S. Capitol next year.
