Notorious American gangster John Dillinger was shot and killed on July 22, 1934 in Chicago after a short crime spree in the Twin Cities.

Dillinger and his gang moved to St. Paul after escaping from an Indiana jail earlier that year. The month that followed was filled with bank robberies and shootouts.

The gangster was known for terrorizing the Midwest, killing 10 men, wounding 7 others, robbing banks and police arsenals and staging 3 jail breaks.
