One person is dead after the SUV she was driving crossed the median on Interstate 94 between Minneapolis and St. Paul Monday afternoon and hit a pickup truck going the opposite way head-on.

The accident caused a major traffic backup in the area near the Hwy. 280 interchange for several hours.

The Minnesota State Patrol identified the SUV driver as Mee Y. Vue, 63, of St. Paul.

The patrol says Vue was driving westbound on I-94 about 3:30 p.m. and crossed the grassy median into the eastbound traffic lanes for "an unknown reason." Her car then struck a pickup truck in the eastbound lane head on. She died shortly afterward.

The driver of the other vehicle, 34-year-old Justin Honken of St. Paul, suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Traffic on eastbound I-94 was diverted away from the accident scene for several hours, and drivers were urged to avoid the area.

All traffic lanes reopened about 7 p.m.
