The state fire marshal is investigating a New Year's Day house fire in Vadnais Heights in the east metro.

The Pioneer Press reports that firefighters arrived shortly after noon at the house on the 700 block of West Berwood Avenue and fought the flames there for about an hour.

KSTP says one person who was inside the home died in the fire. Neighbors told the station that a woman lived in the residence and shared it with her boyfriend. They said the house was being renovated.

Investigators have yet to confirm the identity of the victim. WCCO noted the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office is waiting for the medical examiner’s report as it pursues its investigation.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this point. The house is considered a total loss.
