Fugitive in heroin overdose death nabbed in Chicago

A suspected drug dealer wanted on third-degree murder charges was arrested Friday in Chicago.

The Star Tribune reported that police have been seeking Devon McFerrin, 31, since he was charged with supplying the heroin that killed Timothy C. St. John, 31, in February. Police said St. John bought the drugs from McFerrin, then died of an overdose in his Hopkins apartment.

KSTP reports that McFerrin was stopped by police in Chicago as he was driving. When his identity was confirmed, he was booked into the Cook County jail.

Prosecutors have turned to the third-degree murder charge in an effort to bring more serious charges against dealers. A record 120 people died of heroin or opiate overdoses in the Twin Cities in 2011, according to state records.
