According to the 98-page filing in U.S. Bankruptcy court, Dave Eckberg and his wife, Stacy Einck, owe a list of more than 100 creditors nearly $2.4 million, the Pioneer Press reports.
"This is a personal bankruptcy. It has nothing to do with Lumberjack Days," Eckberg wrote in an email to the Star Tribune. "It does not affect anybody's claim against Lumberjack Days or St. Croix Events."
The couple had coordinated the summer festival along the St. Croix River in Stillwater since 1994. Ater 18 years, the city cancelled this year's event citing unpaid bills, pending litigation and public disapproval.
Washington County Attorney Pete Orput told Stillwater Patch his office is reviewing allegations of fraud and felony theft and could file criminal charges in a couple of weeks.
