The Minnesota State Bar Association will make history next week as its first openly gay president takes over the organization for a one-year term, the Pioneer Press reports.
Phil Duran, the legal director for OutFront Minnesota, will start his term Monday.
The University of Minnesota Law School graduate began volunteering with OutFront -- an advocacy group for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community -- in 1997 and joined the staff of the advocacy group in 2000.
Duran previously was elected as the MSBA's secretary in 2010.
The legal executive is also a founding board member and co-chair of the Minnesota Lavender Bar Association, which is an organization for LGBT attorneys, law students and judges.
The Minnesota State Bar Association is a 16,000 member-strong lawyer organization that aims to improve the practice of law, advance the goals of the justice system and benefit the community.
