Overnight storms bring flash flooding to southern MN

Streets in southern Minnesota cities were flooded after heavy thunderstorms passed through the region overnight.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flooding warning just before midnight for the Interstate 90 corridor as storms brought high winds and torrential rain.

Almost 6 inches of rain had fallen by 3 a.m. in some areas.

More than 2,000 homes across the southern half of the state, including the Twin Cities, Montevideo and Mankato areas, remain without electricity after Saturday's storms, according to Xcel Energy's power outage map.

Pictures on Twitter show flooded streets in Austin, Albert Lea and Fairmont, with the NWS having advised people to move to higher ground.

The storms had earlier brought 70 mph winds as they developed over west-central Minnesota, toppling trees and damaging power lines.

Some of the rain reached areas of eastern Minnesota and northwest and west central Wisconsin that are still recovering from major flooding earlier this week.

"Worst heatwave" on the way

The NWS is warning that dangerous heat wave will arrive in Minnesota the middle of next week. It’s expected to bring temperatures ranging from the 90s to over 100 degrees.

This is due to a "huge" area of high pressure from the desert southwest, the Washington Post says.

Southwestern parts of the United States were recently hit with a record-breaking heat wave. Some areas saw temperatures up to 120 degrees, USA Today reported.

The NWS has more on the heat wave they say may be “one of the worst” in the last few decades. Click here to read more.
