Overtime win as East Grand Forks defeats Hermantown for Class A High School Hockey title

The Green Wave of East Grand Forks Senior High (26-4) defeated the Hermantown Hawks (27-3-1) to win the Class A High School Hockey championship in a classic Saturday afternoon nail-biter at the Xcel Center in St. Paul.

The Grand Forks Herald reports that the explosive 5-4 victory gave the Green Wave its second state title in two years.

East Grand Forks was leading Hermantown by a score of 4-2 , when the Hawks got in gear with a rally the Associated Press described as "miraculous," hitting two goals in the final minute of regulation play to force the overtime.

Tanner Tweten, who had previously scored, hit the OT goal to give the Green Wave their victory; Austin Monda scored two goals while Dixon Bowen picked up the other Green Wave goal.

The Duluth News Tribune notes the title game was a rematch of the final game last year, when the Hawks lost to the Green Wave 7-3.

Previously, KSTP noted that this was Hermantown's sixth year in a row to play in the Class A championship game; they've been runners-up for the past five years.

Immediately after the game, the winner of the 2015 Herb Brooks Award was named. Dixon Bowen of East Grand Forks, who got his 20th goal of the season in the title game, won the Brooks trophy. Bowen is a Mr. Hockey finalist and North Dakota signee.
