Pain at the pump eases as gasoline prices fall
After hitting record highs, gasoline prices in Minnesota are now falling, according to Minnesota Public Radio.
Gas Buddy's TwinCitiesGasPrices.com, which tracks local prices, reports motorists in the Twin Cities can find a number of stations are charging between $3.86 and $3.90 per gallon this Memorial Day. The average price in the metro is $4.05 a gallon. The website reports that one year ago, the average price for a gallon of gas was $3.58.
A week ago, the average price of a gallon a gas in Minnesota hit an all-time high of $4.28 a gallon.
Gail Weinholzer, director of public affairs for AAA Minnesota-Iowa, said Minnesota's prices at the pump were the highest in the nation because Midwestern refineries had shut down for maintenance. However, the refineries are now resuming operation and because of that, she said she expects the downward trend in prices to continue.
"We expect [prices] to continue to decline as we head into June. And as a result, probably about the second to the third week in June, we'll be back around the national average," Weinholzer said.
