It'll cost a little more for long-term parking at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
The rate to park at the main terminal (Terminal 1) has gone up by $2, to $24 a day, or $22 for the ePark discount, according to the airport's website. However, short-term parking rates and parking at Terminal 2 did not increase.
Officials are hoping raising the price at Terminal 1 will encourage budget-conscience travelers to opt for Terminal 2 parking, which saves $8 a day, and reduce some of the stress associated with parking at MSP Airport.
Officials told the Pioneer Press the ramp at Terminal 1 is frequently at capacity on 40 or 50 days of the year, forcing travelers to drive to Terminal 2, where parking is rarely full, and take the light rail back.
That added inconvenience has caused some people to miss their flights, the newspaper notes.
Airport spokesman Patrick Hogan told the Pioneer Press the demand for parking, which is the biggest source of revenue for MSP, has been on the rise, going up 7 percent last year alone.
This has airport officials planning to add additional parking options at Terminal 1 to ease parking stress.
A discount parking option is expected to open this spring, and the Pioneer Press says the airport hopes to build additional ramps at Terminal 1 in the future, which the increased parking fee will help pay for.
