Police look for vehicles involved in fatal hit-and-run

Authorities have identified one of the vehicles in Tuesday evening’s hit-and-run accident on the border of Brooklyn Park and Brooklyn Center Tuesday night that left a Brooklyn Park man dead.

The Minnesota State Patrol announced Wednesday afternoon it is looking for a 2004 Suzuki Vitara with gray fender flares and damage to its left side, similar to the vehicle shown in the photograph above.

Troopers believe it is one of two vehicles that struck and killed Meshu Lamu, who was crossing the southbound lane of Highway 252 at 73rd Avenue North just before 7 p.m. Tuesday when he was struck by two cars, neither of which stopped afterward, according to the State Patrol incident report.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, WCCO reports.

State Patrol Lt. Eric Roeske said Lamu, 61, lived about three blocks away from where he was hit.

Lamu was walking across the highway against a red light when he was struck, Roeske said, according to the Star Tribune.

Lamu was wearing dark clothing and it was dark outside at the time of the accident, according to Roeske.

Lamu’s son, Abebe Bulto, told the Star Tribune his father was on his way to catch a bus to work.

Bulto said Lamu immigrated from Ethiopia almost three years ago and was hoping his wife could soon join him.

The patrol said the the second vehicle has not been identified. Anyone with information about either vehicle is asked to call 763-279-4559.
