Pedestrian killed in collision while running across Highway 55 in Medina

The victim is a 54-year-old man from nearby Hamel.

A pedestrian has died while crossing a highway in Medina, Minnesota Friday evening.

Medina police say they were called to Highway 55 at County Road 116 (Pinto Drive), near the Medina Golf & Country Club, just before 9 p.m.

The pedestrian was running north across the two-lane Hwy. 55 when he was struck by a Nissan Rogue traveling westbound.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office said.

He's been identified by the State Patrol as Paul Michael Piekarski, 54, who lives in nearby Hamel, which is a neighborhood of Medina.

The driver of the car was a 55-year-old woman from Buffalo, with the State Patrol noting the road conditions at the time were wet.

State troopers have been putting together reconstruction of the incident, which is still under investigation.

Fatal crash numbers have been lower in Minnesota so far this year compared to last year, with the Department of Public Safety telling BMTN there had been 56 fatalities as of Apr. 2.

This compared to 65 at the same time last year.
