Pet food company Stella & Chewy's recalls dog and cat food over Listeria concerns

Pet food maker Stella and Chewy's is recalling some of its products because of concerns over possible Listeria contamination.

The company, which is based in Milwaukee, said a routine test of its products in Maryland found the Listeria bacteria in a sample of its chicken freeze-dried dinner patties for dogs, the Associated Press reports.

So far there have been no reports of pets or humans becoming ill from the food.

Listeria can cause serious illness and sometimes death in children, the frail and the elderly. Healthy people may suffer flu-like symptoms, such as high fever, headache, nausea and diarrhea. Animals that get sick typically have similar symptoms, the company said.

Stella and Chewy's is recalling all the products with the same lot number as the contaminated one, as well as any products that may have been exposed to the affected lot.

Some of the recalled products are:

Carnivore Crunch - Chicken Recipe

Carnivore Crunch - Turkey Recipe

Freeze-Dried Chewy's Chicken Dinner for Dogs

Freeze-Dried Chick, Chick, Chicken Dinner for Cats

Freeze-Dried Tantalizing Turkey Meal Mixers

Freeze-Dried Tummy Ticklin' Turkey Dinner for Cats

Freeze-Dried Salmon & Chicken Dinner for Cats

Frozen Duck Duck Goose Dinner Morsels for Dogs

Frozen Chewy's Chicken Dinner Morsels for Dogs

Frozen Surf 'N Turf Dinner Patties for Dogs

Frozen Chewy's Chicken Dinner Patties for Dogs

A complete list of all the recalled products is posted on the company's website, along with their lot numbers, UPC codes and "sell by" dates. Customers should look at that information on their pet food packaging at home to see whether it's part of the recall.

If it is covered by the recall, consumers should return the food to the place of purchase to receive a full refund, or they should dispose of it, the company said.

Stella and Chewy's sells "minimally processed" raw dog and cat food that is sold in a freeze-dried or frozen state. It's distributed nationwide, and is sold at dozens of pet food stores across Minnesota, most notably at Chuck and Don's Pet Food Outlet stores.
