It's construction season. This weekend, road closures in the Twin Cities are backing up traffic, especially in the west metro.
A stretch from I-394 in Minnetonka to I-94/I-694 in Maple Grove shut down Friday evening. It will remain closed through Monday at 5 a.m.
Crews will be moving all I-494 traffic onto the southbound lanes. There will be two lanes of traffic open in each direction while crews work.
Highway 100 from Edina to Golden Valley will be closed in both directions until Monday at 5 a.m.
According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, crews will be completing the demolition of the Highway 7 bridge.
The department is working to reconstruct the highway at the Highway 7 and Minnetonka Boulevard interchanges in St. Louis Park. And crews will be widening the road between West 36th Street and 25 1/2 Street so that there are three lanes on both sides.
In St. Paul, a stretch of Highway 5 between Davern Street and Highway 55 will be reduced to a single lane in both directions. That will last until November.
Several Highway 5 ramps will also be closed.
New Brighton bridge
Starting Monday at 9 a.m. the County Road E2 bridge over I-35 in the Arden Hills, New Brighton area will be closed.
MnDOT says the bridge will remain closed through August. And the actual removal of the bridge is expected to happen April 30 to May 1.
The new bridge is designed to be longer lasting, smoother, wider and more modern.
Additionally, MnDOT says ramps between eastbound Highway 36 and Lexington are closed through September.
The northbound Highway 55/Hiawatha Avenue ramp to 7th Street is closed through May 2.
The ramp from eastbound I-94 to 7th Street is closed until June. Starting Monday, there will be 14-day ramp closures. The closures will span Century Avenue to eastbound I-94 and westbound I-94 to Century Avenue.
