This year, Saint Paul Winter Carnival-goers can take a dip in some icy cold water.

It's for a good cause, of course.

Visitors are invited to take the Polar Plunge – which is new this year for the carnival. It raises money for more than 8,200 Special Olympics athletes in Minnesota.

The Snow Park Plunge, as it's called, will be held at the Saint Paul Winter Carnival at the Vulcan Snow Park. That's at the State Fairgrounds.

It begins as 12 p.m. on Jan. 29 and will go for 45-90 minutes, depending on how many people are taking the plunge.

Participants will dress up in outrageous costumes – because you're already diving into ice water, might as well embrace the craziness of it.

If you'd like to get in on the freezing-cold action, you can register here. From there, participants are asked to raise at least $75 for the event.

Special Olympics

Special Olympics is a global program that encourages people with disabilities to celebrate their abilities through sports.

The organization has competitions that happen all year throughout the state, in 17 different Olympic-style sports.

Special Olympics uses the Polar Plunge to raise money and awareness. In fact, it's the organization's largest fundraiser.

If you can't make the Saint Paul Winter Carnival's Polar Plunge, there are 22 Plunge events across the state. You can find one here.
