Faribault Middle School was placed in lockdown Tuesday after a 12-year-old boy shot another student with a BB handgun.

The victim, a 13-year-old boy, suffered a minor injury to his arm when he was confronted in the restroom by the boy and then shot, a news release says.

The student reported the incident to staff member, who told the Faribault Police School Resource Officer. The school went into lockdown, and a teacher located the boy within minutes.

"Thanks to the quick reaction of staff and our police liaison officer, the situation was taken care of almost immediately," Todd Sesker, superintendent of Faribault Public Schools, told the Faribault Daily News.

The student told officials he had used a BB handgun, which was then found in a backpack in his locker. He was arrested and transported to a juvenile facility, pending charges, the release says.

No one else was injured in the incident, which happened around 12:44 p.m.

"We take these situations very seriously and I want to assure you that staff reacted appropriately," Sesker added, according to the Faribault Daily News.
