Maplewood Police arrested a 90-year-old man in connection to the death of his 65-year-old son Saturday night.
Police responded to a home of the 1200 block of Hilltop Court at 7:41 p.m. after a man called 911 saying he had shot and killed his son, a news release says.
When officers arrived, they called into the home and asked the man to come outside. He was taken into custody without incident.
Officers found an adult male with an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The father and son lived together at the home.
A neighbor told the Star Tribune that the son was very nice and did odd jobs around the neighborhood. He also made sure not to leave his father home along for too long. KSTP reports a friend said the father suffered from dementia and Alzheimer's.
“The focus of investigators at this point is to determine exactly what prompted this tragic shooting,” Maplewood Police Chief Paul Schnell said in the news release. "In addition to providing answers to family members and the criminal justice system, we hope to explore potential strategies to intervene in such cases to prevent lethal acts of intra-familial violence."
Investigators plan to present their preliminary findings from the investigation to the Ramsey County Attorney's Office on Monday, at which point charges could be filed.
