An 18-year-old Iowa woman has been charged with child neglect, accused of leaving two nieces ages 1 and 6 in a Bloomington hotel room while she and a man went to a strip club and a casino, the Pioneer Press reports.
Hotel staffers found the children wandering in the hotel at about midnight on Friday, the newspaper reports.
The children were taken to an emergency child-care center, the Pioneer Press says. Their teenage aunt, Alexah Mauskemo, has been charged by Hennepin County prosecutors with two misdemeanor counts of neglect of a child. Bloomington police found dirty diapers and open alcohol containers in the room, the newspaper reports.
Her companion, Douglas Cadotte, 39, was charged with felony drug possession, the Pioneer Press says. Police said they found methamphetamine in his pants.
The children's mother, Mauskemo's sister, told investigators that Mauskemo had taken the children Feb. 22 for a weekend trip to the Mall of America, and that when she didn't bring them back, the mother said she "blamed the weather," according to a criminal complaint.
These types of cases are not new to police. In Hopkins, police recently said they arrested an aunt accused of leaving children in a car while she was in a bar drinking.
