A northern Minnesota man has died after the gas station he is accused of burglarizing caught on fire.

Koochiching County Sheriff Perryn Hedlund on Friday identified the deceased as Colton Tammi, 26, of International Falls.

The sheriff's department says they were called to reports of a break-in at the Y Knot Gas Station at Pelland Junction, near the Canadian border, late Wednesday night. They reached out to the suspect by telephone and he threatened to shoot the officers.

Police surrounded the building, then it started on fire. Sheriff Hedlund tells BringMeTheNews they tried to get the suspect to come out but he would not cooperate. And because of the threats, firefighters did not go in after him.

Tammi's body was removed after the fire was extinguished.

Sheriff Hedlund says they don't believe anyone else else was in the building during the suspected burglary or fire.

The cause of fire is being investigated.
