Update: 2-year-old girl in critical condition after being shot

Police say the girl is "gravely wounded."

A 2-year-old shot in St. Paul early Monday is in critical condition.

St. Paul Police said in an update that afternoon that the girl was "gravely wounded" and is suffering from "life-threatening injuries" at Regions Hospital.

She was among the three people struck around 12:10 a.m. – officers in the area heard several shots and police responded. The other two victims were both adult males. They were transported to Regions as well, but with non-life threatening injuries.

The department says there is likely a connection between one of the victims and the shooter (or shooters), though it's unclear exactly what it is. Police have brought witnesses in for interviews, but describe some as "uncooperative."

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Saint Paul Police Department Homicide Unit at 651-266-5650.

The original story from Monday morning is below.

Three people were shot early Monday in St. Paul, including a toddler who was shot in the head.

Police say the shooting happened around 12:10 a.m. on the 200 block of Maryland Ave. W., which is in the city's North End.

A 2-year-old girl, who was shot in the head, is in critical condition, while two men suffered non-life threatening injuries, according to a tweet from FOX 9's Rob Olson.

The Pioneer Press is reporting about 20 family members were in a backyard celebrating Father's Day when shots were fired, apparently from a nearby alley.

Police say the shooting wasn't random, but they're still not sure how many people were involved or what their motive was, Olson tweeted. Anyone with information regarding the shooting is asked to call police at 651-266-5650.

This is the latest shooting in a string of incidents on St. Paul's North End, with the Pioneer Press saying two people have been fatally shot in the area since the start of May.
