Police officer's gun fires during early morning struggle with driver

A Brooklyn Park police officer's gun discharged during an altercation with a driver early Sunday morning, and now the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is investigating.

The incident happened around 12:20 a.m., when the officer responded to a loud music complaint on the 9600 block of Scott Lane North, a news release says.

The officer found a man, who had multiple warrants, in a vehicle.

While the officer was arresting the suspect, the man assaulted the officer, the news release says, at which point officer's "firearm was discharged."

Neither the officer nor the suspect were hit, but they were both taken to the hospital to be checked out. When the suspect was released, he was arrested for assaulting the officer.

The man and the officer have not been identified.
