The Bemidji Pioneer reports local law enforcement found upwards of 55 dogs and some cats in two trailer homes west of the city. The women were removed for health and safety reasons. The Humane Society and others are investigating.

Carl Eugene Remmers, 66, died in a river outside Pierre, S.D. after his golden retriever ran out onto the ice and broke through. Rescuers found the dog alive, treading water about 100 yards away. The Bemidji Pioneer reports Remmers pleaded guilty to a gross misdemeanor and resigned from the district in 2010 after he was charged with inappropriately touching a 17-year-old boy.
