Police: Suspects point gun at, choke 75-year-old in home invasion

A 75-year-old woman was bound and later choked until she became unconscious during a home invasion over the weekend.

The Maplewood Police Department said in a news release the incident occurred around 1 p.m. on Saturday, on the 1700 block of Gervais Avenue.

According to police:

The victim was about to leave her house when a female suspect rang the doorbell and asked to use the victim's phone. She refused, and the suspect then pulled out a gun and pointed it at the victim, then forced her way in.

Once inside, the suspect made a call from her own cellphone and two males came. One of the men bound the victim's hands, while the others took jewelry, credit cards, keys, and the victim's driver's license.

Before the suspects left, one of the men told the victim to get on the floor, then wrapped a piece of clothing around her neck and choked her "to the point of unconsciousness."

She later woke up and called police from a neighbor's house.

Chief of Police Paul Schnell told BringMeTheNews she she had cuts and bruises, and was taken to the hospital. She's since been released and is with family.

Schnell said police believe the home invasion is connected to the burglary of a nearby unoccupied home from just days earlier – credit cards from both incidents were used at stores, and surveillance footage from those locations shows the same suspects.

They're also sending information to other law enforcement agencies in the area to see if additional incidents could be connected, according to Schnell.

Police don't have any other tips or leads they're pursuing at this time, Schnell said, outside of the surveillance images.

The suspects are described as African-American, 20 to 30 years old. One of the male suspects has dreadlocks or cornrows, and is a thinner build. The other has shorter hair and a heavier build. The woman has a thin build, police said.

Police also provided surveillance stills of two males (seen above), taken from the stores.

Anyone who can help identify the suspects, or knows their whereabouts, is asked to call 651-767-0640, or 911 – or text anonymous tips to TIP411 including the word "Maplewood" in the text, along with the tip information.
