Police: Teenager shot, killed while attempting to rob adults in St. Paul

Author:

A 16-year-old West. St. Paul boy was fatally shot by an individual police say he was trying to rob.

The boy was killed when police say he, along with three other teenagers, approached two adults near Summit Avenue and Mississippi Boulevard in St. Paul last Friday night, according to FOX 9.

Police say the teenager pulled a gun on the adults, FOX 9 reports. One of the robbery victims, with a valid permit to carry, took out his own firearm and shot the boy, according to authorities.

The teen who died was later identified by family members as Lavauntai Broadbent, heading into his junior year at Henry Sibley High School, reports note.

According to WCCO, Broadbent – whose nickname was "Man Man" – died at the scene in Shadow Falls Park. The shooter called 911 and attempted to give him medical help.

The Pioneer Press reports the three other teens involved were later arrested and could face charges. A spokesperson for the Ramsey County Attorney's Office told the paper they haven't received a case from police to determine whether the shooter should be charged.

The Star Tribune looked at some of Broadbent's earlier run-ins with the law.

In May, the teenager pleaded guilty to third-degree riot in a gang-related fight, as part of a fight the month before at a St. Paul Embassy Suites Hotel. The fight comprised juveniles with three different gangs, though Broadbent denied he was a member of a gang, according to the paper.

WCCO, the Pioneer Press and the Star Tribune spoke with people who knew Broadbent.

Some expressed concern about how many times he was shot (a detail the Ramsey County Medical Examiner has not released at this point). They acknowledged the teen had gotten into small amounts of trouble, but expressed shock and disbelief that he could have been involved in such a serious incident.

A woman who identified herself as Broadbent's cousin publicly posted a video tribute on Facebook.

Man man I can't believe you like not you .. I know you knew better then the things you did but it's all about choices like my mom always tell me , we all love you and miss you already god really does take the best but this #manmanworld and you live thru us
