A Minnesota police department is asking drivers to slow down and pay attention to road conditions following a crash over the weekend.

In a post on Facebook, the Big Lake Police Department says an officer was stopped on Industrial Drive near Highway 10 Sunday night waiting for a motorist who was reported to be "driving recklessly."

That's when a van traveling westbound on Highway 10 lost control, went diagonally through the intersection and hit the officer broadside.

The high-speed impact of the crash sent both vehicles into the ditch.

The driver of the van had outstanding felony warrants in two states and was uninsured, police noted. He was brought to a hospital to be checked out and is now being held at the Sherburne County Jail, KARE 11 reports.

The officer was also taken to the hospital, the news station notes. Police say the officer "will be fine."

Roads across much of the state were partially or completely covered in snow Sunday night as falling snow combined with strong winds to create blizzard-like conditions.
