An authentic Chinese food restaurant that's popular among University of Minnesota students is closing after more than four decades.

Village Wok, which calls itself one of the most well-known authentic Chinese restaurants in the Twin Cities, will close for good on Sunday Aug. 21, according to a post on the restaurant's Facebook page.

Hundreds of people have commented and shared Village Wok's Facebook post, saying they need to visit the restaurant one last time before it closes.

Village Wok told BringMeTheNews it is closing because a new apartment complex is going in at the corner of Washington Avenue Southeast and Southeast Harvard Street. In April, reports said the project threatened the future of Village Wok and Big Ten, as well as a few other popular Stadium Village businesses on the block.

Hilary Dvorak, the City of Minneapolis' principal city planner, told BringMeTheNews Thursday that the city council has approved the 27-story project, and the people behind the project will be submitting an application for a building permit "shortly."

The Business Journal reported this spring developers hoped to start demolition of the site in the fall.

Village Wok Restaurant first opened in 1975 – it was started by a few foreign students from Hong Kong, the restaurant's website says.

But after two years they handed it over to several New York chefs who were originally from Hong Kong so they could focus on their studies.

The business expanded, and since 1981 it has been open until 1:45 a.m. every day.

Village Wok has be named the best and favorite Chinese restaurant by various publications over the years, including Minnesota Daily, Minnesota Monthly and the Star Tribune, according to the restaurant's website.

People took to Twitter to share their shock that the restaurant is closing:
